Las Vegas – The Strip Vs Downtown

As a frequent visitor to the great city of Las Vegas, people often ask me if they should stay on the strip or downtown. To answer that question you will need to determine why are you going to Las Vegas, and what your budget is. Let’s look at the differences between the strip and downtown.

The strip as it is commonly referred to is actually Las Vegas Boulevard and is one of the most famous streets in the world. If you drive down the street from the airport the first casino you will see is the Mandalay Bay and about thirty casinos later you will see the Stratosphere. If you’re looking for the newest, most opulent casinos the strip is for you. The Mandalay Bay, Bellagio, Venetian, and the Wynn set the standards of Luxury in Las Vegas.

If you love to be a sightseer then you need to stay on the strip, there are hotels for every budget and you will be a short distance from the new casinos, which are an attraction themselves. On the strip you also have world class shopping with stores from all over the world. The gambling on the strip can be a little more costly if you play table games as the bet minimums are higher than downtown, but if you play slot machines and video poker the rates are the same. The dining on the strip is world class and you can find any cuisine you desire. You can also find a buffet in just about every casino, and some of them are truly outstanding.

The downtown area of Las Vegas has about twelve casinos and they are very close together, all easily within walking distance of each other. Downtown is definitely the old school Vegas where the budget minded and the serious gambler can be found. The table limits are definitely lower downtown and there are plenty of slot machines and video poker. You can probably find more nickel slot machines downtown than anywhere else in Vegas.

The hotels range from good to great with the Golden Nugget being the most opulent casino downtown. Every night you can venture outside of the casinos and look up and see a light show called the Freemont Street experience which connects most of the downtown casinos. If you like a laid back, block party atmosphere then downtown may be the place for you. If you do want to see the casinos, or catch a show on the strip it’s only a cab ride away.

The bottom line is that whether you prefer the mega resort casinos on the strip or the smaller budget minded casinos of downtown you should have a great time. Always check the web for vacation packages. Good deals are always available in Las Vegas, so enjoy your vacation.
